How Many Uses? Let Us Count the Ways

Did you know?

There is an organic carbon compound that, when activated, is a porous, low-density compound used to extract various harmful toxins.  Actually, It can be used for many purposes.

What is it, you ask?

None other than Charcoal

Before you grab the bag of charcoal you’re planning to use at your next barbeque, you should know that the charcoal structure we’re talking about is quite different.  Charcoal used for the grill contains toxic substances – do not attempt to use it for anything other than cooking!

Charcoal is activated by a process of heating at a high temperature which becomes a fine black powder made from bone char, coconut shells, peat, petroleum coke, coal, olive pits, or sawdust.

It doesn’t sound appealing, does it?

However, it has been considered a universal antidote for a long time, and it continues to be promoted as a potent natural treatment.

The negatively charged activated charcoal attracts the positively charged harmful toxins and chemicals in the gut, which prevents the body from absorbing them and helps to remove them.

Some Unusual Uses

Activated charcoal has some interesting uses, including medical purposes.  Some of them might not be new to you, and some may surprise you!

Have you ever had to call poison control?  If so, they may have recommended immediate care from a physician for a dose of activated charcoal.  That’s right.  It can be used as an emergency poison remedy

It can be used as an anti-poison treatment or as medication for a drug overdose, even for over-the-counter medication such as aspirin or acetaminophen.  However, it is not effective in all cases of poisoning and should not be administered at home.

Some studies have shown that activated charcoal may improve kidney function in people suffering from chronic kidney disease.  Those with the disease do not easily expel urea and other toxins from the body.

Due to its binding structure, activated charcoal supplements have been beneficial to patients with end-stage kidney disease.

It’s important to note that experts agree that more research is needed for this one.

Need to lower your cholesterol?  Activated charcoal may help.  Because the charcoal absorbs harmful chemicals and toxins in the body, it may reduce cholesterol levels.

Several studies have been done to prove charcoal’s effectiveness at reducing LDL levels (the bad kind).  Researchers found that larger dosages were more beneficial.  They also discovered that HDL levels (the good kind) increased by 8% when taking 24 grams per day.

Again, only a doctor should prescribe activated charcoal in a medicated form.  Updated research is needed on this topic as well.

People have found other unique ways to use activated charcoal, such as preventing a hangover, reducing gas, filtrating water, and deep cleaning facial and body skin.

Teeth whitening!

Today, we have plenty of pastes, rinses, and tools to clean our teeth.  But have you ever thought about how people in the olden days cleaned their teeth?

It turns out the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Arabs were pretty smart and were able to come up with some creative solutions.

They concocted tooth powders that ultimately set the precedent for modern day.  Many of the ingredients they used continue to be added to the toothpastes stocked on the store shelves in present day.

Because of its ability to cleanse and neutralize toxins, charcoal was one of those elements used.

We have come a long way since then.  We now know that activated charcoal works by absorbing plaque and other teeth-staining compounds, also called tetracycline.

We also know that applying charcoal to teeth helps to keep them whiter.

A 2019 publication found that charcoal toothpaste can whiten teeth within 4 weeks of use.  Teeth whitening products are very popular and many contain activated charcoal.

The benefits of charcoal teeth whitening solutions are:

  1. Helps remove surface stain on teeth
  2. Improves bad breath
  3. Helps prevent stains and discoloration

It’s important to be aware that the use of charcoal products is too abrasive for everyday use and should only be used occasionally.
