Carbamide peroxide.
Any compound that contains two oxygen atoms is referred to as a peroxide. When hydrogen is added to peroxide, it becomes an oxidizing agent. This process causes a synthesis where the oxygen atoms lose electrons, altering any substance to which it is applied. When hydrogen peroxide is used for whitening teeth, it creates a chemical reaction that works to dissolve the stains on teeth.
When hydrogen peroxide is combined with another chemical compound known as carbamide or urea, it creates carbamide peroxide. Although it has a slightly different chemical makeup, carbamide peroxide is also an oxidizing agent that works to lift stains in the same way that hydrogen peroxide does.
Both hydrogen and carbamide peroxide change the chemical composition of stains when applied to teeth and are sometimes referred to as bleaching agents. Bleaching tends to change the shade of the tooth enamel, and whitening usually refers to the removal of surface stains caused by substances such as coffee, tea, and wine. Many dentists do not distinguish between the two terms and apply both compounds in the same manner – in a tray filled with gel containing one of these peroxides.
Carbamide peroxide’s oxidizing power is released within two hours; it continues to activate for up to six more hours. It contains hydrogen peroxide in a 1:3 ratio, meaning that a 30% carbamide solution consists of 10% hydrogen peroxide. Cleaner Smile products contain 36% carbamide peroxide!
